Episode: a fairy tale
Sunday, July 20, 2008

For the whole day today, I stayed at home..again. As usual, I spent my time doing my assignments. I completed the History and Theory of Ideas assignment and also my GEMS hands-on work 3. The rest of my day was boring, so I am going to tell you guys on how I approached my GEMS hands-on work 3.

We had to come up with a tale by using the S.C.A.M.P.E.R method. The topic example given were Haunted house, Spider-man 4, Die Hard 5 and Mummy 3. From what I see, the topics bring us to do something like a sequel to these movies. Then I thought, why not making a prequel to a famous fairy tale. Wouldn't it be interesting? I thought about it long and hard. In the end, I came up with this.

Title: Little Alice-before the red hood

S - substitution ( to replace the big bad wolf with a younger wolf)

C - combination ( to combine a mother with culinary expertise to create a mother with many secret recipes)

A - adaptation ( to adapt the usual happy ending with an open-ended ending leading to Little Red Riding Hood)

M - magnify/minimize ( magnify the reality of normal lives)

P - put to other use ( the red hood was previously used for riding horses)

E - eliminate ( remove the violence )

R - rearrange ( run away to hide rather than killing the wolf)

Let me begin the story:

This is a story of a child named Alice, who had never given her mother’s cooking a miss. She lived in a house with two other; one was her mom, while the other was her grandmother. Her mother was very good at cooking. All her dishes were lovely. Up to a point that it even made her friends filled with envy. Everybody wanted to have a taste of her dishes as it was too delicious. She closed her restaurant a year before, because her recipes were what her rivals were looking for.

Now, only Alice and grandmother would enjoy her creations, as they were of relation. Alice’s mother often travels on a horse, to get her ingredients of course. One day her supplies ran out. She told Alice and grandmother to take care while she goes to the market to get carrots and some bean sprouts. She went off, after having cushioned her seat with a red cloth.

Soon, a young wolf passed by, wanting to give her dishes a try. Alice just ignored the wolf, as her mother said not to talk to strangers especially the ones with big tooth. The young wolf walked away and warned her, that he would eat Alice instead when he gets older.

Her mother got home after some time. After Alice told her mother about the wolf, her mother demand that they move, and not to even leave a dime. They moved to a simple house near the sea and her recipes are kept far away where no one would ever see. Just to keep an eye on her recipes, grandma volunteered to keep it safe somewhere beyond the forest trees.

Grandma had a house there, where she spends most of her childhood. At times grandma would miss mother’s cooking, so Alice thought of a plan of visiting grandma to bring her food every other evening. To hide her identity from the wolf, she made something to cover herself up with the red cloth her mother had and it was smooth. Alice was no longer her name, whenever she visits grandma, she would stuff her basket filled with food, and everyone recognises her as Little Red Riding Hood.

The End

The rhymes took me quite some time to do. But I hope you guys liked it as much I enjoyed creating it. (This fairy tale story is fictional. Any similar situations with the story are just coincidental. - copyright of Muhammad Junaidi bin Abdul Wahid)
